About Our Morrell's Airship Aviation History Vintage Photograph. Photograph was taken in Berkeley, California in 1908. John A. Morrell designed a cigar shaped airship filled with hydrogen. It crashed to the ground, with 16 people onboard and luckily no one was killed. The ship wrecked in front of 10,000 spectators. Morrell himself was in the ship.
