P.T. Barnum's Circus Ad Vintage Photograph - The Great Roman Hippodrome! Circus ad dates back to 1855. Eventually the circus became known as the famous Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus. Barnum got his start when he purchased a slave woman who was blind and paralyzed and he claimed that she was 160 years old and the nurse of our first president, George Washington. He put her on display. Among his display were dwarfs, a mermaid and Siamese twins.
